THE OLD HABERDASHERS'  ASSOCIATION

A message from the President, Harry Hyman.

"A very warm welcome to all visitors to the web site of the Old Haberdashers' Association, the association of former pupils of Haberdashers' Aske's Boys School now based in Elstree, Herts, UK .

The Association offers an opportunity for former pupils to maintain or renew contact with their contemporaries; whether by attending social events or reading/contributing to the literature produced by the Association. In respect of the latter, the annual magazine, "Old Boys' Notes", includes a wealth of information about the wide range of activities currently undertaken by the Association, as well as a variety of relevant articles. It incorporates News From Elstree, a summary of events at the School in the past 12 months.

As we look ahead as an Association, one of our major objectives is to be more relevant to the needs of former pupils and thus to increase our active membership significantly. The principal means of achieving this will be to provide our members with a sufficient variety of activities, both sporting and non-sporting, to encourage regular support. There is a huge range of pursuits not reflected in the Association's schedule at present, from drama and music to tennis and hockey, from travel and writing to chess and bridge, and we are planning to broaden our focus on the desires of recent and not so recent leavers to attract them into active participation in the Association.

The Association is not just a meeting place for sports players but a facility for all members to enjoy, and this web site is intended as a catalyst for a change in the ways in which the Old Boys meets the needs of its members and potential members. The web and email offer new ways to achieve this aim. If you are a member and we are failing in this objective, please let me know and suggest ways in which we can do better."

Social Events

Each year there are a number of well established social events alongside a variety of new attractions. One of the major and long standing events has been the decade dinners for representatives of each decade to gather at the Association Club House in Borehamwood for a convivial evening.

Other events throughout the year include the Annual Dinner, the President's Gourmet Evening, the Common Room Dinner and the Ladies Night as well as many other less formal occasions held at the Club House or at an outside venue.

All the sports clubs hold their own social functions ranging from the Cricket Club Annual Dinner held at Lord's Cricket Ground to the Rugby Club's Former Players lunches and the evening dinners after many of the Golf Society's matches. Finally there is the important Old Boys' Day - held at the School twards the end of June.

In conjunction with the School, a wreath laying ceremony to the memory of all Old Haberdashers who were killed on active service during the past century is held around 11th November each year.

As an Old Boy you are most welcome at any of these events that make up the busy Social calendar."
