THE OLD HABERDASHERS' R.F.C.
Report for the 1991/92 Season
CAPTAIN: A Charles PRESIDENT: A Alexander
The 1991-92 season's results at 1st XV level were somewhat disappointing as the playing record suggests. However this is probably not a true reflection on the overall standard of play throughout the season. We managed to achieve a mid table position in the Old Boys Merit Table and remained in the same Courage League through victory in our final league match. The side lost a number of games in the final minutes and by small margins and I feel deserved more for their efforts.
In a season which had few high points the 1st XV did manage to defeat OMT (12-9) and Old Millhillians (15-9) which was the first time this had been achieved since 1974. These two results illustrate the ability that does exist within the team and I feel that, given the right level of commitment, attendance at training and availability, the side should achieve a great deal of success next season.
Andy Griffiths finished the season as top try scorer and produced many impressive performances whilst Jeff Hipkin scored over 100 points with the boot.
The A XV achieved far greater success than in recent seasons and were, like the 1st XV, unlucky not to finish with a better playing record. The side benefitted from an influx of new players and an excellent team spirit and the team manager Bob McClymont should take a lot of credit for this. There are now more players pushing for 1st XV places which raises the level of competition and should ensure continued success for the A XV next season.
The Ex A XV under the guidance of Andy Gray achieved some success with a number of wins most notably the record score against Stanmore Orthopaedic Hospital. There is now a good nucleus of players in this side and they continue to enjoy their rugby. The Ex A XV is a vital part of the club and we must continue to encourage the players to participate regularly and provide the support to their team captain.
The season ended with a tour to Worcester with 1st team fixtures against Worcester and Cheltenham and Skylarks fixtures against Worcester and an Invitation side. The opposition proved to be very strong but both sides contributed spirited performances and played some good rugby. Once again all tourists had a thoroughly enjoyable time.
Next season sees Andy Griffiths take over the responsibilities of club captain and I hope that the players will give him their full support. If the players demonstrate total commitment, attend training and make themselves available on a regular basis then the club will experience success at all levels next season. Remember the beer always tastes a lot nicer after a win!
My thanks go to the numerous people who have served the club so well during 1991192 season and in particular Tony Alexander, our outgoing President, the team managers and captains and Nobbly Tanner.
Finally I look forward to next season and wish Andy Griffiths every success. The club has a lot of potential both on the field of play and in the bar - I'm sure we can make full use of both.
