THE OLD HABERDASHERS' R.F.C.
Report for the 1990/91 Season

CAPTAIN: A Charles PRESIDENT: A Alexander

This season the rugby club has experienced mixed fortunes with reasonable success at 1st XV level but unfortunately not in the lower sides. Once again, the problems experienced by the A XV and EX A XV have been due to a lack of players and also infrequent availability. This is a great shame as a nucleus of players have strived hard for success throughout the season, and deserve greater reward for their efforts. The problem of playing numbers is being closely addressed during the close season and the club hopes to field at least three regular Saturday sides, a veterans XV and a Colts XV next season.

The 1st XV playing record illustrates a fair amount of success. In fact the season started quite superbly with the 1st XV not losing until the 11th match. We finished in the top half of the CLOB Merit Table and also in the league where an early push for promotion unfortunately faltered after Christmas.

The success was built around an excellent team effort and spirit with the back play enhanced by the welcome return of J Blundell, L White and A Griffiths and the forwards benefiting from the experience of L Gould and B Dempsey. The top points scorer was C Rincy who bagged over 100 points and S Gresswell finished at the top of the try scoring chart.

The A XV and particularly EX A XV continued to play their own particular brand of rugby but unfortunately without the success they deserved.
The major plus factor of the season, was the continued success of the Colts XV who remained unbeaten for the third successive season and produced a great deal of open and exciting rugby. If these players can be encouraged to stay at Old Haberdashers then the club has a very bright future.

The season ended with a tour to Scotland which was a great success. The 1st XV remained unbeaten with wins against Lochaber and Oban and the Skylarks produced an excellent performance against Lochaber. All tourists, particularly the President, had a thoroughly enjoyable time.

My thanks go to the numerous people who served the rugby club so well during the 1990-91 season. I look forward now to my final year of captaincy and hope that it will bring success throughout the club with all players enjoying their rugby and of course the socialising after the game.
