THE OLD HABERDASHERS' R.F.C.
Report for the 1987/88 Season
Captain Andy Charles President Ray Kipps
The 1987/8 season proved to be extremely successful for the OHRFC 1st XV, but unfortunately the lower sides were unable to match this success. As the records shows, the 1st XV had the most successful season in the history of the club, in terms of the number of wins achieved. It should also be noted that we had a much stronger fixture list than in previous years, making the achievement that much greater. For the lower sides, a lack of players, fitness, and balance to the teams contributed to below average performances for much of the season.
The season saw our participation in the new league structure. We managed to adjust extremely well to the more competitive side of league rugby and gained a creditable second place in Middlesex League Division 1. Unfortunately, we failed to produce our league form in the Old Boys Merit Table and finished in a disappointing mid-table position.
I feel that perhaps the two highlights of the season were the 12-10 victory over CLOG to mark the 50th anniversary of the ground and the 19-10 defeat of Centaurs in the last match to clinch the record.
In all games a strong and fairly mobile pack won enough possession to make use of a talented back division. Richard Lynch, who was selected for Middlesex County Clubs, and Alun Stevenson, who broke the 1st XV appearance record in the match against Old Blues, were dominant in the pack, whilst the three-quarters benefited from consistently fine and mature performances from Paul Downes and Simon Lloyd. Other mentions should go to Martin Baker and David Griffiths, who each scored 10 tries.
The A and Ex-A had poor seasons, but there is hope for the future with a number of young talented players around. With correct leadership and organisation next season should see an improvement in the fitness of these sides.
The season was rounded off with a tour to Italy which proved to be an extremely successful venture. The performances on the field this year thankfully matched those in the bar and 4 out 6 games were won. The1st XV remained unbeaten and produced some exhilarating rugby in the 43-3 victory over the host club, Piombino.
The Rugby Club Committee and tour committee continue to put a great deal of work into the smooth running of the club and I thank them for this. Thanks should also go to Terry Downes, who put a lot of time and dedication into his first season as coach. The players, particularly those in the 1st XV, benefited from his firm but knowledgeable approach to training.
This season was very pleasing for me in my first year as captain, but I feel it is now important to look to next season and concentrate on the strengthening of the club in depth so that all sides can achieve an enjoyable and successful season.
