THE OLD HABERDASHERS' R.F.C.
Report for the 1980/81 Season
President EH Amstein Captain P Howe Secretary J A Tout
At the turn of the year the 1st XV results read P 19, W 9 L 10, FOR 242, AGAINST 220, the best figures since Philip Alterman's 1964 team. However, again the Club suffered during the latter part of the season from the lack of consistency in team make-ups.
In January, the 1st XV achieved a notable victory by 23-19 over the Combined London Old Boys. OH fielded their strongest team, and the regret is that the same combination could not be repeated more often. Roger Walters has been a regular playing member of the CLOB and on occasions, Alun Stevenson. Both are to be congratulated on being selected for the Holland Tour, where all games were won.
Congratulations are in order for:
Robert Stagg Honours Tie
Hassan Razwi Honours Tie
Nigel Alexander 200 Club
Roger Walters 200 Club
One hundred and twenty guests and members attended the Annual Dinner at the Mount Royal Hotel (same venue next year) and two Past Players' Reunions. Beef and Beer and Players' Supper functions were enjoyed by all who attended, but more response would be welcome.
The Easter Tour turned out to be an enjoyable one, but too much like hard work - all three games were lost, and Alan Cooper has been seriously spoken toll
The Burgess Report was published during the season by the RFU setting out ideas for changes in the structure of rugby football - divisions, leagues and what-have-you. Sounds like a round-ball job! For the moment, however, the RFU has turned down the proposals, and your Club is liaising closely with the Combined London Old Boys in an endeavour to present some form of solidarity (familiar!?) should the question of leagues be raised again.
On a personal note, I have enjoyed my three years as Hon. Secretary and would like to thank all those who helped me to re-educate myself in the ways of Old Boys' rugby! I look forward to next season in my new capacity, and wish Ian Smart every success as the new Hon. Secretary.
